Llama’s First Day of Work

My First Day of Work Outfit!

My First Day of Work Outfit!

Today was the first day of…the rest of my life, which for the next 10 weeks will be about interning in the production department of a publishing company in NYC!  The first day was extremely fun; it was all about introducing the company and making the interns feel welcome.  The only problem is that I feel welcome now and I kind of don’t want to leave after August 14th.  Maybe if I’m really good they’ll let me stay.

For lunch my boss took me to a cozy pub up town…Up Town…up-town…Up-town…? whatever. THEN.  After Lunch. All the interns did a scavenger hunt!  It was so super fun.  We ran–I mean walked professionally–around the office and took pictures of things on the list that we had to find. My team found everything, but they won’t tell us which team won until tomorrow.  That is not nice.  (P.S. There is no prize)

One of the free books we got was Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.  I’m really happy I got it because I’ve been meaning to read it since I took a Native Literature class this past semester. Sherman Alexie is really funny and tells amazing, deep, insightful stories.  His characters make you laugh and relate to them, and sometimes you really wish you didn’t.  If you’re looking for something good to watch check out a film Alexie wrote, and Chis Eyre directed, Smoke Signals. It is a buddy film that followes two Indian boys on an adventure where they learn what it means to be an Indian.

Unrelated to books and movies…

I decided that starting a job would be a good time to start a new routine focused on self-improvement, or something.  (yeah, real focused)  This morning I woke up and did a 20 minute yoga routine along with a video.  It sounds lame but it really helped me start my day happily.  I am going to try my best to stick to it and do yoga every morning.

Tonight after work I made dinner and it came out really well so I thought I would share my “recipe” with you.  Recipe is in quotations because I didn’t really do much of anything (there isn’t even salt in it) but it was awesome non-the-less.

OK. So.  Get a deep skillet-pan-thing.  Heat some olive oil in it, and throw some cubed chicken breasts in it.  Then when the chicken is cooked dump a whole 16oz jar of Newmans Own pineapple salsa.  Then a diced red pepper.  A cup of dry rice ( I used non-sticky white).  1.5 cups of water (you might want to put water in salsa jar to rinse it out into the stuff thats cooking so you really get all the salsa into the food and not in your sink) THEN the magic happens.  Put the lid on the skillet-pan-thing and simmer for 20-25 minutes.

TA DA!  Fantastically delicious dinner!

I should write a cookbook.

…ok, maybe not.

Anyway, thats all for today!

Llamas like Apples…well just the one Big Apple, really

Posted by MediaGad Llama on Jun 6, 2009 in Movies, Netflix

I am living in New York City this summer.  I have an internship and a thirst for adventure.  I have been here for three full days now and I have watched a lot of Netflix!  (My job starts Monday)

Corpse Bride what a disappointment.  I have never been one to wear a Nightmare Before Christmas zip-up sweatshirt but I think is definitely an auteur of our generation.  I was really ready to like this most recent creation of his.  Plus Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter did voices, so how wrong could it go?  Well…it felt like Burton was trying to make this one a little more mainstream and made it both uncomfortable and boring.  My biggest complaint was Danny Elfman’s score.  Although he had composed the captivativing music for Nightmare this time he channeled Burton’s wayward mainstream vision.  The songs were more Disney’s Aladdin than Beetle Juice.  I finished the movie only because I wanted to keep knitting.

Then She Found Me was an unexpected film.  I still don’t know exactly how I feel about it.  I like it.  I like that Helen Hunt looks her age.  I like that her character struggles in a real and messy way.  Colin Firth is wonderful as always, even as a crazy emotional single Dad…or maybe, especially? Pretty much the movie made me realize that I would love Bette Midler to be my mom.  Or at least one of them.

For those of you who haven’t seen the movie, it is about a woman, April (Helen  Hunt) who gets married to her friend, she is also adopted, and jewish. Oh! and she is a kindergarden(?) teacher and does not have any children of her own even though she would very much like one or two.  She is trying to have kids but she is almost 40! (apparently the filmmakers haven’t heard 40 is the new 30 and anything is possible at 30) Another thing that makes having kids difficult…having a husband that doesn’t want to be married.  I swear I haven’t given anything away, this all takes place in the first 10 minutes.

This film is for women with life experience who will appriciate other women’s stories of struggle and heartache.  This is NOT a film for all females to watch and ogle Colin Firth.  He doesn’t get that much screen time and only a few peticularly sigh worthy moments.

Today I watched Cleopatra, talk about epic!  It is four hours, and I kid you not, I paused it and took a nap a the “intermission”.

Elizabeth Taylor was stunning in every shot.  I wish I had just one of those costumes, and could look as half as fabulous in it.

I know this production is a classic but I have to say that Cleopatra and Antony wasn’t nearly as entertaining as Cleopatra and Caesar.  I didn’t believe that Cleopatra would turn into a mushy pain in the ass for Antony.  He never did anything, he wasn’t that hot, and I just don’t get why she liked him better than Caesar.  Maybe I was just tired of the movie by the time their relationship starts 2 hours in.  Even though their portrayal of the famous love affair didn’t hold my attention, the sets and costumes did, so I guess I shouldn’t complain.  I’m just throwing this out there, I wouldn’t mind living in Cleopatras “tomb”.

Moral of the story is, Netflix is still awesome in NYC.

But despite my love for instant movies on my computer I will try my best to have a life outside my apartment this summer.  I will keep you posted on how that goes.

“Silence is a Great Healer”

Posted by Alle Llama on Mar 15, 2009 in My Random Awesome Life, Uncategorized

Raindrops pelted onto the rooftops for miles

Cars sped by with groaning engines

The thoughts of the world whispered in people’s heads

All was amplified by heightened senses

My head throbbed from the vibrations

Each one coming at me in consecutive waves

Eardrums protested with pain-filled screams

The shock of it was insurmountable

Claustrophobia in my own head

If all of sound were to cease, molecules would have to freeze

Raindrops could not fall

Cars could not drive

Whispers would not exist

A static existence would be a silent one

For molecules to not move, forces must stop

Gravity throughout the universe could not exist

Energy sources would deplete

Planets would stop spinning

All motion of the universe would end

The absence of silence would be no great ailment

For life thrives on sound

A mere headache is a small price for life

The lack of sound is only a misperception

Infrasonic and ultrasonic waves exist without knowledge of the listener

Unnoticed vibrations are more menacing than the noticed

It is the extremes that bring harm to the ignorant

Silence is only an illusion

Sound is always in existence

Silence does not heal, because it does not exist

I like blueberries.

Posted by Alle Llama on Mar 1, 2009 in Uncategorized

Blueberries are pretty much the best thing ever, next to cranberries.  There are blueberry scones, yogurt, pie, and sauce.  You can eat them raw or cooked.  They can be in cereal and pancakes.  Last night I dreamed of blueberries.  I opened the fridge to find three containers of them.  Mom said that I could not have any because she wanted them.  Then I told her that there is no point in eating cereal without blueberries.  It was a very short, very odd dream.

In Your Face!

Posted by Olivia Llama on Feb 25, 2009 in Books

This is directed at everyone who sucks at life.  Stephenie Meyer’s favorit shows are Flight of the Conchords, Pushing Daisies, Grey’s Anatomy, The Colbert Report, The Office.  So there are some cool people who like Pushing Daisies.  She was also born in Connecticut.  If she were not famous and in Arizona she would totally hangout with us.

Chapter Two: Trust and Blood

Posted by MediaGad Llama on Feb 12, 2009 in Heroes, Television

WARNING: Do not read if you have not yet seen through Heroes episode 4.2…which is actually season 3 episode 15…?

Ok, so, Heroes.  The premier last week of Part 4 Chapter 1 was good, but predictable.  I understand that they need to set up this new season or whatever so I guess I’ll forgive them.  This week’s episode, Chapter 2 Trust and Blood, was much better, because I cared a lot more about what was happening.  I have a lot to say.

Matt
How is it that Matt can use his future-seeing power way better than anyone else who got the power before?  Ok, in the first episode he drew all those pictures really well!?…when he said he couldn’t draw, and then he couldn’t tell that it was a picture of him and the cheerleader in his apartment by the window about to get shot!?  Really!? I understand that the dead African dude is mentoring him from the beyond but seriously.
I do have to say, handy—Matt can call on his power whenever he needs it, like when searching for the best escape root from the Feds/Nathan’s flunkies.

New rule: follow the man with the creepy white eyes.

Although, if he has such amazing control of his precog powers (possibly due to his previously developed mental control from hearing others’ thoughts, and influencing them) how did he not see that Daphne, a.k.a. my favorite chick on the show, was going to die!?

Up until this point…
…I did not care about this season’s main story arch.  Why should I care if Nathan is being stupid again.  He is trying to help by being über-controlling.  It seems pretty straight forward, he is putting the heroes into concentration camps…its been done.  I’m not intrigued.  I don’t have any questions about why, or how, or whatever.  I seriously don’t see why I should watch…other than Peter Petrelli and Sylar.
However!
When Noah Bennett said to Claire, “Its more complicated than you know.”  I was like, “Oh, snap.  Really? Sweet!”
See I, unlike Claire, trust Noah.  I mean when has he lead us astray?  He is the man when it comes to fighting The Man from within!  I’m just saying.  He knows what’s up, and Claire needs to grow up…and stop having a crush on her Uncle Peter. (I know that’s unrelated but seriously.  Those two have the most intense sexual chemistry.)

So I got back into it.
But why did Sylar used the remote to turn off the tv when he has telekinesis…what the hell Sylar?!?!

Props to running across the ocean, Daphne!

Human microwave…? Is he Sylar’s half-brother?  I think so.
At first I thought the human microwave thing was lame but I have to say, microwaved people, way cooler than microwaved peeps.
Sylar “And I let you live which is kind of a big deal for me” I just really liked when he said that, so I thought I would put it in here.

“I’m not giving you absolution” –Mrs. Petrelli
Um…ok…what? Who cares.  Nathan is boring.  I think Mrs. Petrelli is going to kill Nathan, just like she killed her husband.  Its going to be interesting.  I hope.

But seriously…
As of this week’s episode they have killed off all the strong women on the show. There is only the passive aggressive mother who has premonitions, the whiny slutty politician who can freeze things, and the cheerleader who can heal herself…and just got grounded. The girl who can run fast, the one with lightening coming out of her fingers, the little girl who can find people, and split-personality really strong woman, all are off the show. WTF!?

I do like Nathan’s Matrix/dress coat when he walked away, down the huge hallway and it said “to be continued…”

Next week is going to be amazing because it is sweeps week And because my love(r) Peter Petrelli is going to be leading the fight against The Man, also known as Nathan Petrelli.  Personally I think that if America gave its Vice Presidents more to do then we wouldn’t have this problem.

P.S.  I have gotten MO’B, my roommate, really into watching Heroes with me.  It started because I told her she would fall in love with Sylar—because she has a thing for tall dark and evil men—and I was so right MO’B LOVES Sylar!  At first she was afraid of his eyebrows because they are big enough to eat the world, but then she really liked his evil smile and violent use of superpowers.  Moral of the story: she is in love with Sylar despite the forests above his eyes.

I guess my question is, would she rather he wax them?

I found a new love!

Posted by Olivia Llama on Feb 11, 2009 in Books

I have been looking for a new book to fill the whole in my hart, and I have found it. Wake is the book that i have been waiting for. It has Si-Fi where she gets sucked into people’s dreams, and a frustrating love story.  This book is to amazing that i read it in one day and I am getting the sequel this week end.  Oh, and I forgot to mention that it also has undercover work. What else does a book need? How am I going to last one more day  without Fade the sequel?

It Is Back!!

Posted by Olivia Llama on Feb 4, 2009 in Heroes, Television

I watched Heroes and it was amazing.  I am soo happy that it is back and I can’t wait for Mondays now.  This episode was so good that I had dreams about it.  Even in the one episode you think you have everything figured out and then it gets all mixed up.  Also I was so happy about Peter’s new power it total came in handy.  I really can’t wait for next week it is going to be amazing. :) I love Heros!!!!
