Feel the Love
I remember when my kids were little, I'd read a bit about transitional objects. These are the things, like blankies and teddies that young children attach to as they take a step towards greater independence. Change is a scary thing, but with a trusty blankie by your side, it can free you up just a little bit to get off on the adventure of it all.
My friend Janet likes to buy herself one new toy every time she gets a new job. She probably doesn't think of these things as transitional objects. But it is true that every time she begins a new job she is leaving an old one. I think it's a brilliant move on her part because rather than burning up her free evenings obsessing about all of the unknown terrors to be discovered at her new place of employment, she's out taking digi pictures or burning dvds. Added bonus: the cumulative effect of this reward system is that Janet is quite adaptable and unafraid of change.
It's obvious from my resume that I have little fear surrounding job changes. However, I have noticed a trend in my own life, a spin on Janet's reward system. When a significant relationship ends, I like to acquire a new electronic toy. Or I upgrade my website. Pathetic? Yeah, probably. But reading the manual and exploring all the glorious new features really can move me out of self pity and the ben & jerry's container. Also, *bonus*, I expand my technical abilities. In the last little while, I've acquired a nifty mp3 player and a new cell phone. One year, I bought a digital camera and a laptop. One can only imagine what my personal life was like that year. My recollection of that time is actually quite happy.
I try to refrain from spilling excessive amounts of pixels about my personal life here. But I have managed to post photos of some of my favorite things. As with most snappy modern fiction, I'll leave it to you to draw your own conclusions. I will warn you, however, you are wrong.

And another thing
So I called the cell phone company to increase my minutes and they told me I was eligible for a free new phone. I love free. I love new. But this is how it starts. This new phone is a camera phone. This new phone can send and receive text messages like nobody's business. This new phone can accept customized downloadable songs for ringtones. Did I say, "this is how it starts"? First there was the Guster song Careful as my new ringtone. Now I love it when I get a cell call. Next, when the internet was down for the second day at work, Deb taught me the beauty of text messaging (mental note: call service provider and add text messaging package). Now I'm off to take all kinds of photos so I can change my wallpaper and screen saver. And you wonder why my laundry never gets done?

Extra Freckles, please
Back from Martha's Vineyard. In my brief visit, I managed to spend time on Chappy and went body surfing at South Beach. Mad Martha's ice cream, hammock time, and breakfast at Linda Jean's rounded out a perfect visit. Here's Chappy:
