There's No Place Like Home

yeah, yeah, yeah...

no more posts apologizing for my absence. my life is currently all knitting, all the time, which frankly, is a good thing. The store is doing well and I'm currently enjoying a couple days off. the dishes got washed. A Rowan sleeveless turtleneck in Cork was knit. A lime green lunch bag from Knit One, Felt Too is in process. A hat in mountain colors 4/8s wool, a sock in mountain colors bearfoot, another two-tone sock in cascade fixation, two shawls in Karabella gossamer...I think that's it so far. And so far, it's all good.
I've been enjoying meeting the people who come into the store. We've only placed one ad in a weekly paper so most of our traffic is either drive by or those crazy, dedicated knitters who go all over the planet just to check out the new yarn store. Not that I can understand that?! I already have a few favorites...the two women who used to own a store in the area and are still dedicated and talented knitters. They've been very generous with their time and expertise. I always look forward to their visits. There are a couple of women, mothers of young children, who bolt out of the house on Sunday afternoons to spend their 17 kid-free minutes checking out the new stock and buying yarn to get them through the week. There is also another woman, an attendee at our first 'knit along' whose wisdom and kindness made my Sunday very special. Joan Rivers visited and was lovely, funny and gracious. But the most amazing visit I had was from Mark I. and his wife Cindy. When I was 6 years old and lived in Westport, Mark was the teenage boy next door. I was always just a little bit afraid of him; my family are all big pacifists and I remember him wearing combat-style clothing and having a b.b. gun. I recognized him the second he set foot in the store (freaking him out quite a bit, let me tell you!), but we enjoyed an interesting visit.
The girls and I have become addicted to yet another trilogy: Back to the Future. We've seen parts I & II and are looking forwared to III on Wednesday. It's been enough years so all the buzz and expectation are distant memories and we can just sit back and enjoy the fun. I'm glad we've found some interesting viewing to keep us busy as Angel comes to an end and the next season of Buffy finds its way to DVD in May.

The Village Sheep

The Village Sheep opened this morning at 10am. Here are some of the before pictures:

And the after pictures:

We didn't do any advertising, only putting out our sign the first day. We still managed to have a bit of drive-by traffic. All in all, a very good day!

Why I fell off the planet...

I'm in the store right now and we have internet access!!! For the last few weeks, pretty much all I've done is eat, breathe, and dream of all things yarn. I've used up 40,000 bar code labels as we stock the store. Tribes of people have been marching through: painters, computer consultants, visual merchandisers, ups men (by the dozens). It's really been a blast. Wendy has been orchestrating the teams necessary to have the big picture unfold as it should. And Teresa, our part time helper, has come in to help as much as she can. She's been an amazing asset and I'm very, very grateful for my good fortune. I thinks it's kind of funny that back in 1987, Teresa owned a fabric store in New Milford and I went to her when I wanted to learn how to quilt. The first quilt I made, a black Amish pinwheel quilt, was based on one she had in her store. I used hand-dyed fabrics that were leftover from her quilt and to this day, it is one of the prettiest quilts I made.
Yesterday morning I took some pictures of the store before the mess is cleaned up and before the shelves are stocked. As soon as the "after" pictures are ready to be taken, I'll post them. Til then...
